selling a pattern [Dec. 21st, 2011|11:57 pm]
The Plush Workshop

Someone e-mailed me asking to purchase a pattern I made, for personal use. The pattern is for a small dog, about eight inches tall and eight inches long. Anyone have any advice about pricing patterns? How about handling the legal stuff -- that I don't want the person selling any plushies they make from the pattern?

Best to look at what price teddy bear makers use for selling their patterns to get an idea of cost. Ideally for the pattern not to be used for commercial gain, I would probably be best to have the person agree to this in writing (such as an email) so you have proof should the person try to. Also I would add the stipulation that the pattern can't be passed on to someone else too.

I second getting it in writing. Though really once the pattern is out there, there's no way to be completely certain they won't sell plushes, give it to a friend who will sell plushes, or something like that. It's part of the reason why I've decided to never sell my patterns. There's just no way to be sure it won't be used in a way you're not happy with.
